What is Mechanical Engineering?

Mechanical engineering is a field of engineering that includes activities related to the design, analysis and production of mechanical systems. In design and analysis, a mathematical model is developed using the basic principles of mechanics. In manufacturing, activities are carried out to achieve the optimum production speed using the latest technologies in electronics and computers. Due to its wide scope, mechanical engineering is not a single concept that comes to mind most of the time. For example, heat engineering, construction and manufacturing engineering, automotive engineering are all branches of engineering based on mechanical engineering. In addition to having these basic sub-fields, it is an engineering field that also constitutes the infrastructure for interdisciplinary research topics such as biomechanics and mechatronics. Due to this wide area of influence, mechanical engineering has become a branch of engineering that is highly valued all over the world.

Basically, the subjects of mechanical engineering can be categorized under the following main headings:

  1. Mechanics (Mechanics of Solids, Fluid Mechanics, Computational Mechanics, Biomechanics, Dynamics, Acoustics)
  2. Design and Manufacturing (Optimum Product Design, Process Design, Prototyping, Innovation, Improvement)
  3. Control and Robotics (Automation Systems, Mechatronics)
  4. Energy (Power Plants, Energy Conversion Systems, Solar Energy Systems)
  5. Micro-Nano Engineering (Micro Electromechanical System Design, Biomimics, Quantum Computing and Simulations)
  6. Vehicle Design and Development
  7. Computer Aided Design Analysis and Optimization
