Message of Department Head

Dear Students and Esteemed Visitors,

Bursa Technical University was established in 2010 as the 5th Technical University in Turkey and the 2nd State University in Bursa. Our Physics Department, located within the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, is situated in the Bursa/Yıldırım, Mimar Sinan campus.

As the only Physics Department opened under the Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, our department was founded in 2017, and our master's program became active in 2020. In May 2021, approval was obtained from the Council of Higher Education for our doctoral program, and in June, approval was granted for our undergraduate program. Consequently, we will start admitting students to our Bachelor's and Doctoral Programs from the Fall semester of the 2021-2022 academic year.

Physics, from ancient times to the present, has played an active role in the development of various fields and has been a guiding force. When viewed along a historical timeline, the discipline of Physics was initially associated with branches of philosophy, chemistry, mathematics, and biology. Since the 16th century, it has evolved into a discipline that defines its own framework and has become instrumental in the formation of modern society. Despite defining its own framework, the discipline of Physics is closely related to disciplines such as Mathematical Physics, Quantum Physics/Chemistry, Thermodynamics, Solid-State Physics, Nuclear Physics, etc., and is directly associated with disciplines such as Mathematics, Chemistry, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Medicine. From this perspective, Physics, as the oldest and fundamental discipline, holds a significant place in the formation of the building blocks of modern technology in today's world.

Current scientific research and technological developments aim to elevate the living standards of society, increase the level of welfare, and meet basic societal needs such as health, education, energy, transportation, communication, and security at high standards. Nanotechnology, biotechnology, communication technologies, space technologies, material science and technologies, energy technologies, food, defense systems, and medical technologies emerge as the technologies of today. Understanding the fundamentals of physics, which underlie all of these technologies, is crucial for conducting research and development activities. Advanced scientific research and technology development worldwide are made possible through an interdisciplinary approach in selected priority areas of research and development. Moreover, Physics-Based Industry is the general term for sectors where physics is used and critically needed for technology and expertise in European economies. Sectors that employ physics-based industry require their employees to have education in physics and rely heavily on physics results or theories to achieve their production goals.

Our department differs from other Physics Departments in our country and from the Physics Department of Uludağ University, which is also located in the same city, by having an Program of Vocational Education in Business (IMEP) model. Thus, it aims to be an effective role model in integrating physics with the industry and institutional/sectoral physics studies. While doing so, support will be provided to students through compulsory and elective courses that support the IMEP model without compromising on basic physics in the offered curriculum. In addition to compulsory courses in the curriculum, students will spend their 7th semester in the industry, gaining awareness and acquiring the necessary infrastructure and experience to prepare themselves for the future, taking into account national and international technological developments. In addition, we provide our students with the freedom to conduct their final projects in their 8th semesters by working either with the industry or with academicians. With its historical texture, natural beauties, developed industry, and proximity to mega-cities like Istanbul, being a student in Bursa has advantages, combined with the advantages offered by our department, Bursa Technical University - Physics Department emerges as a great opportunity to be considered for physics enthusiasts.

As a department, our door is always open to all prospective students. I wish you all a successful educational journey in good health and beautiful days ahead.

Best regards,

Prof. Dr. Songül AKBULUT ÖZEN

Head of Department
