What is Industrial Engineering?

Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering that uses scientific methods to improve systems and processes involving interactions with people, thereby increasing efficiency. In essence, it is engineering for productivity.

Industrial engineers can work in various sectors such as automotive, textiles, manufacturing and industrial products, information technology, finance, consulting, mining and metallurgy, electrical and electronics, construction, food, chemicals, services, education, transportation, fast-moving consumer goods, healthcare, household goods, energy, and telecommunications.

Due to the employment opportunities in various departments of businesses including business development and planning, production and manufacturing, engineering, quality management, sales, information technology, marketing, logistics, finance, procurement, and administration, industrial engineering offers a broad range of career opportunities.

BTÜ Department of Industrial Engineering

The Department of Industrial Engineering at Bursa Technical University strives to create a dynamic learning environment in line with its vision and mission. In this context, our academic staff endeavors to foster close and warm communication with students, encourage academic research, and explore current trends. Students actively engage in academic publications and projects during their undergraduate education, undertaking thesis on contemporary issues.

Our department demonstrates an increasing trend in YKS (Higher Education Entrance Exam) preference rankings each year.

In our department, we implement the Professional Training in Business (İMEP) program. Industrial Engineering students spend one semester of their education in a full-time internship program. Our department has collaborations with nearly 100 companies across 14 sectors in 10 provinces for İMEP, with the total collaboration capacity exceeding three times the number of our department's students.

Our department graduated its first cohort in 2023, with 85% of graduates employed within the first two months. In 2024, 68% of students continued to work part-time after İMEP. The location of our campus on the metro line provides a significant advantage in this regard.

Undergraduate Curriculum

In line with our department's vision and mission, we strive to keep our curriculum updated. As of 2024, a comprehensive curriculum change has been implemented. This update involved conducting surveys, industry consultations, advisory board reports, feedback from İMEP students and alumni, reviewing curricula from internationally accredited schools, comparing course contents from schools selected across 3 continents and 9 different countries, adhering to MÜDEK criteria, YÖK decisions, BTÜ senate resolutions, and examining current technological and scientific advancements.

As a result, the curriculum has transitioned to a current and modern educational plan. In this context, the number of elective courses has been increased, and nearly 30 new courses have been added to the elective course pool.

Bursa and Industry

Textiles, automotive, machinery manufacturing, agriculture-based industries, food, and furniture sectors are prominent throughout the province.

Within Bursa's borders, 17 Organized Industrial Zones employ over 200,000 workers.

Bursa, with a population exceeding 3 million, nearly 900,000 in employment, and over 90,000 workplaces, accounts for 3.72% of the country's foreign trade.

Bursa, 3 milyonu aşan nüfusu, 900 bine yakın istihdamı ve 90 binin üzerinde işyeri ile ülke dış ticaretinin %3,72'sini gerçekleştirmektedir.

Bursa sınırları içerisinde yer alan 17 adet Organize Sanayi Bölgesi 200 binin üzerinde çalışanı istihdam etmektedir.

İl genelinde tekstil, otomotiv, makine metal imalatı, tarıma dayalı sanayi, gıda ve mobilya sektörleri ön plana çıkmaktadır.
